Reentry Permit

Reentry Permit allows lawful permanent residents to remain outside the United States for extended periods without abandoning their permanent resident status. It is commonly used by green card holders who anticipate long-term travel or temporary residence abroad.

A reentry permit is requested by filing Form I-131 with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services while the applicant is physically present in the United States. Approval helps preserve permanent resident status during extended travel but does not replace a passport or guarantee admission, which remains subject to inspection upon return.
